Guide School

In 2012, AVA will be accepting about 15 people for our guide school based in Granite (Buena Vista) and about 5 people for our guide school based in Idaho Springs. Both will start with a week together at our Granite Outpost. No previous training on the river is necessary, although river experience, guide/leadership experience, guest service experience, or general water experience will be an asset for you. Guide school starts May 21 and lasts for three weeks. You must be able to attend the full length of guide school. Some people will need additional training to graduate. Guide School costs $500 per student and if you are invited to guide school your position will not be held until we receive payment. This course is geared toward participants that are safety conscious, team oriented, responsible, personable, fit, hardy, and ready for a challenge. Guiding is not for everyone! The responsibility that accompanies guiding should be considered before applying for a position with AVA.

Participation in AVA’s guide school does not guarantee you a job. Your employment with AVA is dependent on your performance in guide school, including but not limited to your ability to take guests safely down the river and to deliver the highest level of guest service. While we plan to hire all of our guide school participants each year, we cannot guarantee employment.

During guide school, we have gear such as wetsuits, splash jackets and life jackets available for your use. When guide school is finished, in order to work for AVA as a guide you must own all of your own rafting gear, including a PFD, knife, throw bag and other paddling gear. During guide school you will have an opportunity to order gear at a discounted rate.

Most AVA guides camp/live in tents/live in their vehicles for the summer. Many of our guides do this and often several guides camp together at different locations. There is National Forest and BLM land around AVA, but there are restrictions on how long you can camp at these locations. AVA does not provide employee housing, however you may live IN A VEHICLE (no tent/RV camping) on a portion of the AVA Granite property. This is the only location and situation where we provide a place for guides to live. Some others rent a house/apartment in Buena Vista (15 minutes from AVA Granite) or Leadville (20 minutes from AVA Granite) or Idaho Springs or Kremmling.

In order to participate in guide school you must have First Aid and CPR certification. This is not included in the price and should be completed prior to arrival. We usually organize a class that coincides with the school for those people who were unable to arrive with First Aid and CPR. Please fill out the application below to apply. We are processing applications right now, so applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
