Hiking in Buena Vista

Buena Vista is located in central Colorado between Salida and Leadville.  This town offers a lot of outdoors activities such as rafting, zip lining, camping and of course hiking.  Being situated between wide valleys and high mountain ranges makes this a prime location for amazing views and challenging hikes.

  • Mount Elbert / Colorado Highpoint

Standing at the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains at 14,440 feet, Mount Elbert is quite the climb.  There are three main routes to reach the summit.  The most popular is the North (Main) Elbert Trail which is about 9 miles round trip with a total ascent of 4,500 feet.  Each of the routes are strenuous and do require decent physical fitness, however you do not need any special equipment or skill in order to reach the summit.  This trail runs primarily from June to October and is used for camping, rock climbing and hiking.

  • Browns Creek Trail

This friendly trail is great for all skill levels with scenery consisting of beautiful wildflowers and waterfalls.  There are also views of Mt. Antero and access to fishing in Browns and Little Browns Creek.  Camping is allowed although there are not camping facilities along the trail.  The total length is 11 miles out and back and is primarily just used as a hiking trail. The season for this trail runs from June until October.

  • Kroenke Lake

This moderate level 8 mile hike is great for a full day trip or an overnighter.  The hike has a bit of a steep grade but the beautiful view from the top is well worth it.  Kroenke Lake is a great fishing spot and a very popular destination for four-wheel drive exploration as well.  There are many hikes that go off from the lake as well. It is primarily accessible from July until September.

  • Huron Peak

One of Colorado's famed "14ers", Huron's main trail runs 7 to 11 miles round trip depending on how far up the access road you park. While the steady grade requires good physical condition, the trail is not technical, and the views are among the best anywhere in the Sawatch Range with impressive panoramas of the surrounding Collegiate Peaks and the valley below.  The trail is most accessible from June to September.
