Winter in the High Rockies is definitely an awesome time. There are so many options for different activities that it can almost be overwhelming. Here is a list of a few of the best adventures!
1) Cross Country Skiing – Downhill skiing can be a huge rush, but sometimes it is nice to slow it down a bit and put on some miles with a pair of skinny skis. Breckenridge offers more than 30 miles of cross-country and snowshoeing trails between its two Nordic Centers, as well as plenty of ungroomed trails if you want to be even more adventurous!
2) Fly Fishing – Even though most of the larger bodies of water are completely covered in ice, the local rivers and streams tend to flow ice free all year long! The fishing is a little harder but the challenge is part of the fun. Don’t be afraid to get a line wet and catch that big Rainbow Trout!
3) Snowmobile Tours – Snowmobile Tours are one of the most adrenaline filled activities in the high country of Colorado. A snowmobile will allow you to access some of the most breathtaking scenery in backcountry. The local guides will give you all the info you will need to safely access these amazing areas.
4) Hut Trip – If you have the experience and skill to safely navigate the backcountry a hut trip is a great way to get some solitude with a group of friends. The Rocky Mountains in Colorado have 29 backcountry huts connected by 350 miles of terrain. The huts range from small shelters very far from civilization to large cabins with saunas right off the trail. Grab that pair of skis or snowshoes and get out there!
