Colorado has long been known as the place to go for any and all mountain biking. It is not only the birthplace of modern day biking, the clear blue skies and crisp cool air make the Rocky Mountains the ideal mountain biking paradise. One of the hardest things to do is pick a place to go for a ride. We’ve compiled a list of all of our favorite mountain bike areas and trails to make this search a little easier for you.
Crested Butte
The entire area is surrounded by awesome trials in one of the most beautiful areas in Colorado. Additionally, it is supported by one of the coolest, funkiest bike communities on the planet. Most of the mountain biking is going to be pretty moderate to intense. Prepare for a lot of big climbs at higher altitudes before you head out on your ride.
Cortez
This is an incredible trail system that is the home of the 12 hours of Mesa Verde bike race every spring. You might do some of the same trails twice, but this is at least a couple days of fun. It can get really hot in this area so make sure you pack a ton of water. Be prepared to exert a lot of energy as well so bring some snacks along to help fuel your body.
Fruita
This is a unique location, particularly its beautiful desert topography around the Colorado National Monument and Colorado River. It’s a unique and well-developed trail system where you can ride for a week and be on something new everyday. People come from all over the country to ride these trails, so it’s got a pretty unique bike riding culture that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Winter Park
Closest to the Denver metro area, Winter Park has a great blend of uphill mountain biking as well as downhill courses. It’s a great day trip and it’s also close to ziplining and rafting if you’re looking for a really exciting day! They also run a race series during the summer with concerts, food and drink. The series is great for those who want to come watch some downhillers or mountain bikers but aren’t quite ready to ride themselves.
There are some free apps like Trailforks and MTB Project that are out there to help you plan your adventure. They also provide up-to-date information on the conditions of the trails. No matter where you end up mountain biking, make sure you look at local restrictions and take into account the different weather possibilities for your trip. More than anything, go out and have fun!
