Earth Day, April 22nd, marks the anniversary of the birth of the environment movement in 1970. The idea for a day dedicated solely to the environment was sparked by founder Gaylord Nelson, a then U.S. Senator in Wisconsin. Nelson began formulating the idea for the day after witnessing the massive 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Earth Day was able to achieve a rare political alignment, with support from both Democrats and Republicans, city slickers and farmers, and rich and poor.
In the spirit of Earth Day, make an extra effort to go outside and enjoy the outdoors. For some this may mean taking a walk on their lunch break, for others it means planning an epic weekend in the mountains.
