Hiking in Idaho Springs

Idaho Springs is a quiet little mountain town just past the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains.  Known as a gold mining town during Colorado’s gold rush it is now known for whitewater rafting on Clear Creek and being the gateway to the Rockies.  However, some of the best hiking in all of Colorado can be found near Idaho Springs.

  • Mount Bierstadt

One of the most popular of Colorado’s fourteeners, Mount Bierstadt is also one the most accessible to hike, located just outside of Idaho Springs.  Around seven miles in length this popular fourteener is deceptively tough, especially for hikers from lower elevations.   The work comes with a reward, though - once summited, the view from the top is amazing with great panoramas of the Front Range and the Mount Evans Wilderness.

  • Torrey’s Peak Trail

Have you ever wanted to bag two of Colorado’s famous fourteeners in one day? Most of the time, if you tried to hike two 14,000 foot peaks in the same day, you’d be called crazy.  With Grey’s and Torrey’s, however, it’s not so impossible. Located just a short distance from Idaho Springs the Torrey’s Peak trail is about five and half miles out and back and is relatively easy compared to other fourteeners.  One advantage is that there are multiple options of ascending.  You can hike, mountain bike, and even take your dog.  Make sure that you hike the saddle over to Grey’s Peak to conquer two fourteeners in one day.

  • Butler Gulch

Butler’s Gulch is a great family friendly trail.  The hike itself is roughly five miles out and back and features some of the best scenery in all of Colorado.  Rated as a moderate hike, it takes only two and a half hours to complete and is accessible year round.  In the winter it is one of the more popular snowshoeing trails in the area and it is not uncommon to see snow on the trail as late as July.  Dog owners are allowed to bring their dogs provided they are on the leash and are cleaned up after.
