Ski season is getting into full swing here in Colorado and though we’re still waiting on more snow, it’s the highlight of many’s spring break travels to the Rocky Mountains every year.  The best thing you can do with the current restrictions at your resort destination is get your lift tickets well in advance and also take some tiem diving into the many other outdoor activities that the state has to offer.  Opt for a few days on the slopes and a few days enjoying the following alternatives to skiing this spring break.

Hiking

One thing to note here is that you don’t want to venture out on muddy trails, which are common in the spring time.  The reason being is not only will you completely cover yourself, but you’re doing more harm than good to the paths and maintenance on them will skyrocket come summertime.  Summit County and areas higher in elevation will still have a good snowpack on their trails, just don’t forget your snowshoes or yaktraks!  The Chicago Trail system surrounding Echo Mountain near Idaho Springs and Mount Evans ends up yielding some great hiking closer to the Denver area.

Mountain Biking and Cycling

Cycling in Colorado

If you’re up in the Colorado Rockies this will not be an option quite yet, but the front range stays fairly dry and warmer leaving you with some options during the springtime.  With just a short drive to Golden or Boulder, Colorado, the sun-exposed mesas don’t hold snow for long.  Venturing out here will present the same situation hiking would in regard to muddy trails, so make sure you’re staying responsible in keeping this trails at tip top shape and not heading out when it’s not suggested to.

Cycling can be a fantastic form of exercise yearround in Colorado.  Lookout Mountain and Golden Gate Canyon Road are hotspots for road cyclists after a few warm, sunny days in the spring.

p.s. Fat tire bikes ARE a thing and make for a great time on two wheels in the snowy Rockies!
